The new W900 Walkman
was announced on October 17, 2005 in London, expanding the Sony Ericsson Walkman family of music mobile phones, and is the first UMTS handset in the Walkman range.
This swivel-action phone offers great quality stereo music, 470MB internal storage with space for 230 music tracks, extended storage using up to a 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, a 2 Megapixel still and video camera, HTML browsing and 3D gaming. Music files can be stored in MP3, AAC or AAC+, MIDI, WAV and XMF formats, and can be easily transferred to the phone with the accompanying Disc2Phone PC software. The W900 delivers high-quality video and web browsing with full screen QVGA video recording, playback and streaming. The bright 240x320 pixel QVGA 262K TFT screen ensures an advanced imaging, multimedia and gaming experience.
Java application opportunities
The W900 Walkman is based on Sony Ericsson's Java
Platform 6 (JP-6), and application developers can use a range of JSRs to create music-related applications, advanced games as well as business and productivity applications.
Opportunities with JSRs for application development include:
JSR 184 performance is enhanced through hardware acceleration, delivering top-of-the-line 3D graphics performance, as demonstrated by the embedded Powerball Arcade game. Also the Mascot Capsule v3 game Asphalt: Urban GT 3D from Gameloft is preloaded on the W900.

- JSR 75 PDA Optional Packages (File and PIM API): accessing e.g. music files, images and phone book
- JSR 135 Mobile Media API: accessing camera and handling sound
- JSR 184 Mobile 3D Graphics API: ideas for other 3D applications than games:
- User interfaces adding depth (3D instead of SVG)
- 3D GPS mapping
- Avatars
- 3D virtual home walk-throughs
- Use camera (via JSR 135) to take picture of historic location, recreate what the place looked like in the past and offer the user a virtual 3D walk-through (requires the use of hardware acceleration)

- W900i Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa
- W900c Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Mainland China. Launch for mainland China dependant on availability of 3G services.
